Can't clear ';search the web'; history. Tools, autocomplete, clear forms does not work! What else can I try?

I have turned off autocomplete, tried to clear forms, password, etc. Closed and opened browser. Still doesn't clear history. I'm stumped. Can't clear ';search the web'; history. Tools, autocomplete, clear forms does not work! What else can I try?
Maybe downloading Yahoo or Google toolbar will work. Or, if you have Windows XP, close all windows of Internet Explorer and open up a brand new one with your home page. Then on the second to top bar on the screen there should be a little symbol that looks like a clock with an arrow going counter-clockwise. Click on this and your entire history should appear. Delete anything you want to from here and to make it go faster pressing and holding the ';Ctrl'; button and clicking each individual web site will let you remember which sites you wanted to delete (these will remain highlighted). Once you've selected all the sites you want to delete right click and choose ';delete'; and that should fix it. Then close out of that window and open up a new one and click back on the icon. You'll know if it worked or not from there. Can't clear ';search the web'; history. Tools, autocomplete, clear forms does not work! What else can I try?
